An Online Seminar on “The Importance of Ethical Values for Institutional Belonging and Loyalty in Academia” Held in Our Faculty

Bartın University Faculty of Health Sciences held an online seminar on “The Importance of Ethical Values for Institutional Belonging and Loyalty in Academia” on May 30, 2024 within the scope of May 25 Ethics Day and Week. The event was attended by academic staff of our Faculty, students of the Department of Nursing, academic staff from other units of our University and 138 participants from different universities of Turkey outside our University. The event was held with the participation of Prof. Dr. Çağatay Üstün, Head of the Department of History of Medicine and Ethics, Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Ege University Faculty of Medicine, and moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hilal Uysal, Head of the Department of Nursing.
Starting his speech with the necessity for each individual to have ethical and moral foundations in order to develop a sense of belonging in academia, Üstün touched upon the concept of academic freedom in reinforcing the sense of academic belonging. Emphasising that the concept of academic freedom should not be politicised in institutions, he stated that academic freedom is the freedom to access and produce knowledge and then to follow it up. He emphasised the importance of developing a sense of belonging to the institution not only in academic staff, but also in students and administrative staff at universities. He mentioned that in order to feel belonging and integrity in the academic sense, individuals should know their basic duties and referred to Kant's ethics of duty. She emphasised the necessity of taking decisions in institutions with unanimity instead of majority of votes, minimising academic pressure factors, being tolerant and supporting role models in order to increase institutional belonging. Our Nursing Department Head Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hilal Uysal made suggestions on what students can do to develop their sense of belonging to the institution. Our Vice Dean Assist. Prof. Dr. Elif İşlek and the event was concluded with the contributions of the students and the answers to their questions.
